February 21 is the 60th anniversary of NASCAR, and we
can't help but remember back to 2004, when John Kerry was pilloried for that statement.
(He actually
didn't say it, but that's beside the point.)
The implication then was that all good Americans were crazy for NASCAR, and anyone who wasn't was a
no-good Commie rat.
That may or may not be true, but we have to get something off of our chests:
we just don't get NASCAR.
It's not the noise.
It's not the waste
of gasoline. It's not even the fiery crashes.
It's just that we don't understand the idea of watching guys making left turns
for 2 1/2 hours. Sure, there's skill and endurance involved. You can't drive
that fast or that distance without those traits, but compared to hitting a breaking ball or
getting racked up
by a 300-pound linebacker -- well, it's just kinda lacking.
Now, we know there are those who enjoy nothing better than standing in the
infield and turning in a counter-clockwise circle all day, and God bless 'em
for that, but, frankly, we'd rather watch paint dry.
So,
Happy Birthday, NASCAR, but please leave us out of it.
