Baseball's October Surprise - October 8, 2007

While baseball's regular season can be a delight, it's in October that some of the game's most notable moments occur.

Consider how October 8 looms in baseball history: In 1908, the Chicago Cubs won the National League pennant and would become the last Cubs team to win the World Series

In 1927, the New York Yankees, aka Murderer's Row (generally considered the greatest team ever), completed a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates to win the Series

Perhaps the greatest feat occurred in 1956, when Don Larsen (a journeyman with a losing lifetime record) threw the only perfect game in World Series history, retiring 27 Brooklyn Dodgers in a row.

We don't know if that historic moment lent any impetus to Walter O'Malley's announcement one year later that the "Bums" would be leaving Ebbets Field for Los Angeles -- or to those very same Dodgers winning the Series on this date in 1959 (beating the Chicago White Sox), but we'd suggest keeping an eye on the game tonight; you might just be seeing history.
